  • Volunteer Description:
    Volunteers may stay in 1 government clinic or may rotate through various clinics throughout the country. Volunteers have to spend a minimum of 1 week in any one clinic but can transfer from clinic to clinic. Third and fourth year dental and medical students can do clinical work under the supervision of a dentist or physician. Teams are encouraged to apply.

    Location Descriptions / Hotels:
    1) (Rukwa) Sumbawanga Regional Hospital: 10-11 hours bus ride from Dar es Salaam to Mbewa; transfer at Mbewa to Sumbawanga for a 5 hours bus ride. Gov’t vehicle cannot pick you up from Dar es Salaam, so you will need to take a bus to the hospital. Government vehicles will take volunteers staying locally to/from the clinic daily.
    • Current staff includes 1 dentist, 2 dental hygenist, 4 physicians (manage the hospital/rarely treat patients), 16 medical assistants. A sterilization unit and wet lab are available here.
    • Cooler environment so mosquito nets will not necessarily be needed; bring anti-malaralial medication/mosquito nets for long/short-term volunteering terms.
    • International telephone access is avialable in the clinic.
    • Internet access is available at the clinic.
    • Volunteers may receive packages here from abroad; packages should be sent courier for delivery assurance.

    Hotels in Sumbawanga:
    a. Mbizi Forest 025 280 2746 Box 660 Majengo Area. To get there, you have to ask the bus for the Majengo area. Another way to reach there, let HealthCare Volunteer local staff know when you will arrive via bus to Sumbawanga and we will have the hotel pick you up from the bus station

    b. Moravian Conference Centre (no mission hotel) Box 13 - telephone: 025 280 2853 / 4 To go there you have to ask for the Moravian Conference Centre.

    Cost are the same: 10,000 - 15,000 tanzanian schillings maximum (1 US Dollar = 1,183.30 Tanzanian Shilling)

    2) Mpanda District Hospital - South Of Kigoma by about 1-2 hours by driving, in Western Tanzania, and bordering Zambia and Rwanda. North of Sumbawanga by a few hours drive.
    • Current staff includes 1 physicians, 0 dentists, 2 dental hygenists. May or may not have sterilization unit.
    • Warmer environment so mosquito nets will be needed; bring anti-malaralial medication/mosquito nets for long/short-term volunteering terms.
    • No email/Internet in the city.
    • International telephone access is avialable in the clinic.
    • Volunteers may receive packages here from abroad; packages must be sent courier for delivery assurance.
    • Dental volunteers: Bring composites, burs, gowns and restorative materials; Dental students: anyone having completed oral surgery rotation could come here.
    • They have a medical anesthesiologist for surgeries and an OB / GYN equivalent working here.
    • Hospital has the following dental equipment: 8 maxillary forceps; 3 straight elevators; 5 mandibular forceps and a central sterilization unit. The are using plastic one time syringes right now. Patient must go to the pharmacy to get anesthestized and then come back to the clinic to receive the treatment necessary. Bring your own gloves, gowns and syringe if possible.


    Hotels in Mpanda:
    a. Christian Convent (accommodations)- $4/night (good security, has a toilet and shower) Another way to reach there, let HealthCare Volunteer local staff know when you will arrive via bus to Mpanda and we will have the hotel pick you up from the bus station


    3) Moshi District Hospital (Mawenzi)
    Moshi District Hospital (Mawenzi), is located in Kilmanjaro Region, 30 minutes drive away from the Kilmanjaro International Airport. International daily flights to Kilmanjaro are KLM, Ethiopian Airways, Kenya Airways. Otherways people can fly to Dar es Salaam with other flights like Emirates and British Airways, and take a bus which is around $ 20, or fly to Kilmanjaro which is around $150. Current staff in Mawenzi Hospital are 4 physicians, 2 Dentists, 2 dental hygienist, and 24 Medical assisstants. The Hospital has a grate view of Mr Kilmanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, and is close to serengeti, ngorongoro, and manyara national parks. Iternational telephones and internate is available at the Hospital. Another opportunity is to go to KCMC Hospital in Moshi, which is a great opportunity for medical/dental students, since many European medical students are already rotating through this hospital.

    4) St. Francis Hospital (Morongo)

    our hospital is located in morogoro rural area about 6hrs drive from morogoro town. its a big hospital which serves more than 350 admited patients. it also serves more than 100 out patients daily. we also have a big CDC clinic which serves about 75 HIV and TB patients daily. overall we have 4 departiments. surgery, general medicene, pediatric and obstetric and gynaecology. we have a total of 8 specialists doctors- 3 surgeons, 2 pediatricians, 2 gynaecologists and 1 physician.we also have 3 general practicioners and about 14 intern doctors in their 1yr of clinical practice. we do all types of surgical procedures including orthopedic surgery with the exception of neural surgery where we refer to national hospital, we do the rest of clinical procedures known to be done in any developing coutry.we have 3 renal dialysis machines donated by italy and which was started to operate this year.we have three operating rooms fully eqeiped.we also have an ICU which serves seriously sick patients and post op patients.in short though designed to operate as a district hospital it serves as a referal to many neighbohood districts and regions.

    Requirements:
    Any medical professional who wishes to work in the country as a volunteer has to send a copy of his/her current license to the Ministry of Health permanent secretary. The Ministry of Health will screen the applicant before issuing an allowance to the Ministry of Social Security migration who will be able to issue your work permit. It is important in your application to the Ministry of Health that you mention which specific gov't health center you wish to work in or which region of Tanzania you wish to work in, otherwise the government will place you in the most needed area. The other option is to send your resume and certified licensure documents to the Regional Hospital where you would actually like to go and work. The Regional Hospital will write to the Ministry of Health and will certify on your behalf to the Ministry of Health to get your work permit. Our first volunteer was placed in February, 2007.

    Visas:
    Volunteers bear the cost of their own visa. Currently visa costs are up to $50 and are usually obtained at the Zanzibar/Dar-es-Salaam airport upon entry. They can also be obtained in your home country from the Tanzanian Embassy. The visa only lasts 3 months but can be renewed for an extra 3 months for $50. However, if you receive a valid work permit from the Ministry of Health, you are considered a resident of Tanzania and you will not need a visa. Work permits will be facilitated by HealthCare Volunteer for volunteers who commit to a long-term project 6 months+. You will bear the actual cost for a work permit which was $300 as of February, 2007; In some short term cases, volunteers going for 5 weeks or less may be exempt through a special relationship we have created with the Ministry of Health allowing some of our short term physicians/dentists be exempt from paying $300 registration fees. Dental/Medical students are exempt from paying for a work permit. Current Visa Rates For Citizens of Other Countries

    Fees:
    In select cases, Food, room and board and housekeeper will be provided at no charge for dentists and physicians and in some cases other health professionals no matter what length of time you commit to. However, HealthCare Volunteer must ask for this setup on a case-by-case basis, so please be prepared to pay your own living expenses. In some cases, Dental/Medical students will get free housing at a guest house in Sumbawanga and some times in Mpanda, but will be responsible for their own food costs. Transportation to/from the hospital and to/from the town you are staying in will be offered through government vehicles for all volunteers in most cases. All volunteers are responsible for their flights and personal expenses. Dental/Medical students are welcome and will be supervised either by local dentists/physicians or by other volunteer dentists or physicians. To reach Sumbawanga facilities, you have to take a bus from Arusha to Mbeya: 1296 Km 26.000 tsh (23 USD$) From Dar es Salaam to Mbeya you must take a bus: 894 km 17.000 tsh (14 USD$)

    3. Upon receipt of your materials, we will process your application, obtain necessary work permits and deploy you to your volunteering site. Filling out the volunteering form is not a guarantee of placement, but we do try to accommodate as many volunteers as possible during the times you request.
