The Malawi people are of Bantu origin with the ethnic groups including Chewa, Nyanja, Yao, Tumbuka, Lomwe, Sena, Tonga, Ngoni, Ngonde, Asian and European. The Chichewa (Chewa) people forming the largest part of population group and are largely in the central and southern parts of the country. The Yao people are predominately found around the southern area of Lake Malawi. Tumbuka are found mainly in the north of the country. There are very small populations of Asian and European people living mainly in the cities.

Volunteer Description:
Volunteers may stay in 1 government clinic or may rotate through various clinics throughout the country. Volunteers have to spend a minimum of 1 week in any one clinic but can transfer from clinic to clinic. Third and fourth year dental and medical students can do clinical work under the supervision of a dentist or physician. Teams are encouraged to apply.

Kamuzu General Hospital: is located in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. Malawi is one of sub-Saharan Africa's most densely populated countries, with about 1.72 million people living in the Lilongwe region, an area that relies heavily on agriculture and urban farming.

2. International telephone access is available in the clinic.
Medical Staff: 1 dentist and 8-10 physicians, 5 dental therapists, 123 dental therapists and 5 dental technicians in the entire country.
Shortages of volunteers at KAMUZU General Hospital in Malawi: Radiology, pathologists, pharmacy, general physicians / pediatricians, dermatologists (no dermatologists), psychiatrist, full range of surgery- except vascular surgery due to lack of (vascular surgeons), no endoscopies, bronchoscopy not available due to lack of equipment, (no cardiologists in the entire country), E.R. services provided, dialysis unit available and functional, but (no nephrologists in the entire country), orthopedics procedures performed, but major spinal surgeries are sent to a hospital 70 km South (1 orthopedic surgeon available), (no oncologists in the entire country).
Machachi Volunteering: A rural clinic about one hour from Quito in and near the small town of Machachi, where there is opportunity to work with traditional midwives and Red Cross clinic. Up to 4 medical volunteers can be accommodated in Quito and in Machala area. Bus fare to Machachi would be probably only a dollar or two. In Machachi : 15 patients per day are treated, but in the weekend, numbers typically surge to 200 people. This opportunity is coordinated with the Red Cross and the patients will be indigenous natives and other type of people too. In Machachi, there are 4 doctors, 2 obstetrics, 2 nurses, plus Red Cross profesionals. The medical/dental equipment are only basic equipment, so any portable equipment in both dental and medical specialties would be appreciated.
Requirements:
Health personnel who are fully trained and qualified will be allowed by the Ministry of Health to offer free medical services in the country and will be given experts from the ministry of health to accompany them to the field/camp.
Volunteers can forward their qualification documents as we prepare for their coming into the country.
